Episode 8 of this nine-podcast series spotlighting “Unity with Diversity” in OA features one OA member who had weight-loss surgery after a ten-year relapse into compulsive overeating and another OA member who had resigned to an inevitable death from compulsive overeating but later found hope in OA literature and a 100-pound (45-kg) weight loss.
Overeaters Anonymous recognizes members who have had bariatric surgery as a special focus in the Fellowship and has issues this policy statement: “In keeping with Tradition Ten, Overeaters Anonymous has no opinion on bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. In the spirit of Tradition Three, Overeaters Anonymous welcomes anyone with a desire to stop eating compulsively, including those who have had bariatric surgery or are contemplating it” (Business Conference Policy Manual, 2018b).
Overeaters Anonymous recognizes members who have lost or are maintaining a 100-pound (45 kg) weight loss as a special focus with in the Fellowship.
Podcasts in this series feature speakers from the WSBC 2017 Forum “Amazing Recovery: Passport to Unity.” Each speaker in this series comes from a different background or uses a different approach to working OA’s Twelve Steps but are united in their recovery from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors. The series illustrates how we can expand our individual recovery by identifying with those in OA who are different from us.
